Overview

Procarbazine is an oral small molecule antineoplastic agent in the class of alkylating agents, primarily used in combination chemotherapy regimens for the treatment of Hodgkin's disease and other cancers. It works by causing DNA damage through alkylation, thereby inhibiting DNA and protein synthesis and leading to cell death, particularly in rapidly dividing cancer cells. Procarbazine also has monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitory activity, but this is not considered central to its anticancer effect. The drug is most commonly administered as part of multi-agent protocols such as MOPP (mechlorethamine, vincristine, procarbazine, prednisone). It is available as oral capsules under the brand name Matulane[1][5][9].
