Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Inhaled PCZ 7.5 mg is a specific dose of AZ-001 (Staccato Prochlorperazine), an investigational drug-device combination product developed for the acute treatment of migraine headaches. It consists of prochlorperazine, a phenothiazine-class dopamine D2 receptor antagonist, delivered via the proprietary Staccato single-dose inhaler. The Staccato system rapidly heats a thin film of the drug, vaporizing it into a condensation aerosol for deep lung inhalation. This method allows for rapid systemic absorption with intravenous-like pharmacokinetics, achieving peak plasma concentrations within 2 to 5 minutes. Developed by Alexza Pharmaceuticals (whose assets were acquired by Nova Pneuma, a subsidiary of Lee's Pharmaceutical, in 2025), AZ-001 completed a Phase IIb clinical trial (NCT00422812) where the 7.5 mg dose met the primary endpoint of 2-hour pain relief compared to placebo. However, further development of this candidate for migraine has been discontinued.
