Overview

ProCord (PN-101) is an autologous cell therapy consisting of macrophages derived from a patient's peripheral blood, which are then activated ex vivo by incubation with autologous skin tissue. This activation process is designed to "educate" the macrophages into a pro-healing phenotype capable of overcoming the "immune privilege" of the central nervous system. Once injected directly into the site of an acute, complete spinal cord injury (SCI), these activated macrophages are intended to clear inhibitory myelin debris, secrete neurotrophic factors, and modulate the local inflammatory environment to promote axonal regeneration and functional recovery. The therapy was developed by Proneuron Biotechnologies based on the pioneering research of Professor Michal Schwartz at the Weizmann Institute of Science. Although it reached Phase 2 clinical trials, development was discontinued following the financial collapse of the sponsoring company.
