prodigiosene-estrone conjugate 3a is an experimental small-molecule research compound designed to target estrogen receptor-positive (ER+) breast cancer cells. It consists of a synthetic prodigiosene (a prodigiosin analogue) covalently linked to estrone via a short ester linker (n=2 carbon chain). The estrone moiety acts as a carrier to direct the cytotoxic prodigiosene payload to ER+ cancer cells, improving selectivity over the parent prodigiosin compound, which has a therapeutic window too narrow for clinical use. In cell-based studies, it reduced the viability of MCF-7 breast cancer cells without exhibiting the estrogenic proliferative effect of estrone alone. The compound was synthesized and evaluated by academic researchers affiliated with Dalhousie University.
