Prodigiosin is a red-colored, linear tripyrrole alkaloid primarily produced by bacteria such as Serratia marcescens, Pseudomonas, and Streptomyces. It is characterized by a unique tripyrrole structure comprising pyrrole, 3-methoxypyrrole, and 2-methyl-3-pentylpyrrole rings. Prodigiosin demonstrates a diverse range of bioactivities—including potent proapoptotic, anticancer, antibacterial, antifungal, antimalarial, immunosuppressive, and antidiabetic effects. The main mechanism of action involves inducing apoptosis in cancer cells, inhibition of the mTOR pathway, suppression of angiogenesis, and mitochondrial dysfunction in certain pathogens. Prodigiosin selectively exhibits cytotoxicity towards tumor cells with minimal effects on healthy tissue and shows potential applications as an anticancer agent and in the treatment of neglected diseases such as Chagas disease and malaria. Its development for pharmaceutical use is ongoing, with particular focus on bioengineering, nanoformulations, and improved delivery systems[1][2][3][4][6][7][8][10].
