Overview

Profermin (also marketed as ReFerm) is a postbiotic product developed for the dietary management of gastrointestinal and liver disorders, particularly ulcerative colitis (UC). It is a food for special medical purposes (FSMP) consisting of oat gruel fermented with the probiotic bacterium *Lactobacillus plantarum* 299v, along with barley malt and lecithin. As a postbiotic, it contains the metabolic byproducts of the fermentation process, which are thought to provide therapeutic benefits even in the absence of live bacteria. Profermin acts by modulating the gut microbiota and strengthening the intestinal epithelial barrier, thereby reducing paracellular permeability and inflammation. Clinical trials have demonstrated its efficacy in inducing remission in patients with mild-to-moderate active ulcerative colitis, and it has also been investigated for its potential to improve colonic barrier function in irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and to halt disease progression in alcoholic liver disease.
