Overview

proff Schmerzgel is a topical analgesic gel containing 5% ibuprofen (50 mg/g), developed and marketed by Dolorgiet GmbH & Co. KG. As a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID), ibuprofen acts as a small molecule inhibitor of the cyclooxygenase enzymes COX-1 and COX-2. This inhibition reduces the synthesis of prostaglandins, which are key mediators of pain and inflammation. The gel is formulated for topical application to the skin, allowing for localized relief of musculoskeletal pain. It is indicated for the treatment of acute injuries such as sprains, strains, and contusions, as well as chronic conditions including muscle rheumatism, osteoarthritis, and inflammatory rheumatic diseases of the joints and spine. The product has been available in Germany since 1984 as an over-the-counter, pharmacy-only medication.
