Overview

Proflavine hemisulfate is a topical fluorescent contrast agent and small molecule vital dye used primarily in clinical research for the real-time detection of gastrointestinal neoplasia. It functions by intercalating into DNA, which selectively labels cell nuclei and allows for high-resolution fluorescence imaging of cellular architecture during endoscopic procedures. In studies led by Dr. Sharmila Anandasabapathy, a 0.01% w/v solution is applied topically to the esophageal or gastric mucosa to assist clinicians in distinguishing neoplastic tissue from non-neoplastic tissue in patients with Barrett's esophagus and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). While historically utilized as an antibacterial agent in umbilical cord care, its modern application in gastroenterology leverages its peak absorption (445-455 nm) and emission (515 nm) properties for use with confocal microendoscopy.
