Overview

Proflora is a multi-strain probiotic food supplement developed by Guna S.p.a., containing a combination of *Lactobacillus* and *Bifidobacterium* strains (including *L. acidophilus* LA02, *L. paracasei* LPC00, *L. plantarum* LP01, *L. rhamnosus* LR06, and *B. lactis* BS01) along with short-chain fructo-oligosaccharides (sc-FOS). While primarily marketed for gastrointestinal health, it has been clinically evaluated and approved for use in managing Dry Eye Syndrome (DES). The mechanism of action is based on the 'gut-eye axis,' where oral probiotic intake modulates the intestinal microbiota, leading to a reduction in systemic pro-inflammatory cytokines and an improvement in the clinical signs of dry eye, such as tear film stability and ocular surface integrity.
