Drug intelligence / Profile preview
ProGastro CD is a veterinary-specific pharmaceutical product containing omeprazole, a substituted benzimidazole that functions as a potent proton pump inhibitor (PPI). Developed by Richmond Vet Pharma, it is specifically formulated as enteric-coated microgranules within capsules to protect the acid-labile active ingredient from degradation in the stomach, ensuring optimal absorption in the small intestine. It is primarily indicated for the treatment and prevention of gastric ulcers, erosive gastritis, and esophagitis in horses, dogs, and cats. Mechanistically, omeprazole irreversibly binds to the H+/K+ ATPase enzyme system (the proton pump) at the secretory surface of gastric parietal cells, effectively blocking the final step of hydrochloric acid production. This results in a significant and prolonged reduction in both basal and stimulated gastric acid secretion, facilitating the healing of the gastric mucosa.
