The programmed death-ligand 1 (PD-L1) i-VLP vaccine is a therapeutic cancer vaccine candidate developed by VBI Vaccines using its proprietary immuno-virus-like particle (i-VLP) platform. This vaccine is engineered to present the PD-L1 protein in a highly immunogenic, virus-like structure to the patient's immune system, aiming to overcome self-tolerance and stimulate the production of high-titer, polyclonal antibodies and T-cell responses against PD-L1-expressing cells. By inducing an active immune response against PD-L1, the vaccine seeks to block the PD-1/PD-L1 checkpoint pathway, a key mechanism used by tumors to evade immune detection. This approach potentially offers a more durable and cost-effective alternative or adjunct to existing passive immunotherapies, such as monoclonal antibodies (e.g., atezolizumab or durvalumab). The program is currently in the preclinical stage of development for the treatment of various solid tumors.
