Prolectin-M is an orally administered, investigational small molecule galectin antagonist derived from a pectin-based (1-6)-alpha-D-mannopyranose polysaccharide, also described as a guar gum galactomannan. It is designed to competitively bind to the N-terminal tail of human galectin-3, thereby blocking the interaction between SARS-CoV-2 spike protein and host cell receptors. This mechanism prevents viral entry into susceptible target cells and reduces viral load in patients with mild to moderate COVID-19. Prolectin-M has demonstrated efficacy in early clinical trials by increasing RT-PCR cycle threshold values (indicating reduced viral load) without significant toxicity. The drug is being developed primarily for COVID-19 but may have potential applications in other inflammatory, fibrotic, or malignant diseases associated with galectins[1][4][5][6][7].
