ProMeris

ProMeris is a veterinary topical ectoparasiticide developed by Fort Dodge Animal Health (later acquired by Pfizer via Wyeth) for the treatment and prevention of flea and tick infestations in dogs and cats. The product was available in two distinct formulations: a metaflumizone-only spot-on for cats and a combination of metaflumizone and amitraz (marketed as ProMeris Duo) for dogs. Metaflumizone is a semicarbazone insecticide that acts by blocking voltage-gated sodium channels in the nervous systems of arthropods, leading to paralysis and death. Amitraz, included in the canine formulation, serves as an alpha-adrenergic agonist and monoamine oxidase inhibitor, providing efficacy against ticks and mites, including those causing demodicosis. Despite its initial approval in 2007, Pfizer discontinued the ProMeris product line globally in 2011 following research that linked the drug to an increased incidence of pemphigus foliaceus, a severe autoimmune skin condition in dogs.
