Overview

Promostem is an allogeneic cell therapy consisting of human umbilical cord blood-derived mesenchymal stem cells (hUCB-MSCs), developed by the South Korean biotechnology company Medipost. It is specifically designed to support patients—primarily children with acute leukemia—undergoing unrelated hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT). The therapy aims to enhance the engraftment of donor hematopoietic stem cells and prevent life-threatening complications such as graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) and graft rejection. Promostem exerts its therapeutic effects through the innate immunomodulatory properties of mesenchymal stem cells, which suppress the activation and proliferation of effector T-cells, B-cells, and natural killer cells while promoting a pro-tolerogenic environment. Additionally, these cells secrete paracrine factors that support the bone marrow microenvironment, facilitating the successful integration of transplanted stem cells.
