PROMUS is a family of everolimus-eluting coronary stent systems developed by Boston Scientific. It is a drug-device combination product designed to treat coronary artery disease by improving luminal diameter in patients with symptomatic heart disease or silent ischemia. The system consists of a metallic stent (typically platinum chromium or cobalt chromium alloy) coated with a biocompatible fluorinated co-polymer (PVDF-HFP) that facilitates the controlled release of everolimus. Everolimus is an immunosuppressive and antiproliferative agent that inhibits cell-cycle progression by targeting the mTOR complex, thereby reducing neointimal hyperplasia and preventing restenosis at the site of the lesion. The PROMUS family includes several iterations, such as the PROMUS Element, PROMUS PREMIER, and PROMUS ELITE, which utilize a platinum chromium alloy for improved visibility and deliverability.
