pronase

**Pronase** is a heterogeneous broad-spectrum proteolytic enzyme preparation derived from extracellular enzymes of *Streptomyces griseus*. It contains multiple endopeptidases and exopeptidases that hydrolyze peptide bonds in proteins, including mucins within gastric and esophageal mucus. Clinically, oral pronase is used as a mucolytic premedication before upper gastrointestinal endoscopy to remove adherent mucus and improve visualization of the mucosal surface; it is an adjunct to diagnostic procedures rather than an anticancer treatment. The Japanese prescription product PRONASE MS is manufactured by Kaken Pharmaceutical and is administered as a powder dissolved in water, commonly with sodium bicarbonate, before gastroscopy.
