Overview
Prontoderm is an antimicrobial medical product available as a nasal gel, solution, and foam, mainly indicated for the decolonization of multidrug-resistant organisms (MDROs), especially methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), from skin and nasal mucosa. The active ingredient is polyaminopropyl biguanide (polyhexanide, PHMB), a cationic antiseptic that acts by disrupting microbial cell membranes, thereby eliminating bacteria physically and inhibiting their growth, spreading, and transmission. Prontoderm is used in hospitals, nursing homes, and homes for both pre-operative cleansing and general MRDO decolonization. It provides a sustained antimicrobial barrier effect and is designed not to irritate or dry the skin or mucous membranes. It is well tolerated, dermatologically tested, and suitable for long-term use[3][4][5][6][8][10]. Developed by B. Braun, it is used in clinical settings to prevent surgical site infections and reduce transmission risk of resistant bacteria.
