Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Proparacaine 0.05% is a dilute topical ophthalmic anesthetic formulation being investigated by the London Health Sciences Centre for the management of acute pain in patients with traumatic corneal injuries, such as corneal abrasions. While standard proparacaine (0.5%) is typically restricted to clinical settings due to the risk of corneal toxicity (keratopathy) with repeated use, this low-concentration formulation is designed for safe, short-term outpatient use. Proparacaine is a small molecule ester-class local anesthetic that functions by blocking voltage-gated sodium channels in the nerve cell membranes of the corneal surface. This action inhibits the initiation and conduction of nerve impulses, providing rapid and effective local anesthesia to alleviate the significant distress and pain associated with corneal surface damage.
