Overview
Propatyl nitrate is a small molecule organic nitrate and coronary vasodilator primarily used for the management of chronic stable angina pectoris. As a nitrate compound, it acts as a nitric oxide donor; once metabolized, it releases nitric oxide which stimulates soluble guanylate cyclase, leading to increased levels of cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP) and subsequent relaxation of vascular smooth muscle. This mechanism results in systemic and coronary vasodilation, reducing myocardial oxygen demand by decreasing preload and afterload while improving oxygen supply to the myocardium. The drug has been evaluated in Phase 4 clinical trials sponsored by the Fundação Educacional Serra dos Órgãos (UNIFESO) in Brazil, specifically focusing on its efficacy and safety in patients with heart failure and chronic stable angina using a sublingual tablet formulation.
