Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Propenidazole is a synthetic small molecule belonging to the nitroimidazole class of compounds. It is structurally related to other nitroimidazoles such as metronidazole and functions primarily as an anti-infective and antiprotozoal agent. Propenidazole acts by damaging microbial DNA through reduction of its nitro group under anaerobic conditions, leading to cell death. It has been investigated for use in gynecological infections and protozoal diseases but remains experimental with a maximum clinical trial phase of II[1][2][8]. Its primary indications are within the genitourinary system as a gynecological anti-infective and antiseptic[1][8].
