Propicillin is a semisynthetic, acid-stable penicillin antibiotic primarily used to treat streptococcal infections. It is structurally and functionally similar to benzylpenicillin but is distinguished by its resistance to gastric acid, allowing for oral administration as the potassium salt. Like other penicillins, it exerts its antibacterial effect by binding to and inactivating penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) on the inner membrane of bacterial cell walls. This action disrupts the cross-linking of peptidoglycan chains necessary for cell wall strength and rigidity, leading to bacterial cell lysis. However, propicillin is not resistant to penicillinase (beta-lactamase), limiting its effectiveness against beta-lactamase-producing organisms[1][2].
