propionibacterium extract

Propionibacterium extract is a lysate derived from the bacterium *Propionibacterium acnes* (also known as *Cutibacterium acnes*), formulated as a topical gel for proctological and dermatological applications. [10, 17] Marketed under brand names like Emorsan®, it is used to aid in the healing of anorectal conditions such as chronic anal fissures and postoperative wounds from hemorrhoidectomy. [3, 6, 8] The mechanism of action involves creating a protective film over the skin and mucous membranes while providing local antioxidant effects. [3, 6] By scavenging reactive oxygen and nitrogen species, the extract reduces oxidative stress and inflammation, which helps to alleviate symptoms like pain, itching, and burning, and promotes the re-epithelialization and healing of tissues. [3, 9] Studies have also investigated its use for anal condylomata associated with HPV infection. [17]
