Overview

**Propionibacterium freudenreichii P.UF1** is a next-generation probiotic strain first isolated from the feces of human breast milk-fed preterm infants. It belongs to the species Propionibacterium freudenreichii and differs genomically from known subsepecies by around 10%. P.UF1 can colonize the gastrointestinal tract transiently in conventional mice and persist longer in germ-free hosts. Mechanistically, P.UF1 supports immune health by inducing generation of regulatory T cells and anti-inflammatory Th17 cells, attenuating proinflammatory cytokines (such as IL-1β) in the colon, protecting against pathogen-induced tissue damage, and promoting beneficial shifts in the gut microbiota. P.UF1 displays strong bifidogenic effects, produces bacteriocins (antimicrobial peptides), and synthesizes substantial quantities of vitamins (e.g., B12, B2, B5, C, K, biotin, folic acid), short-chain fatty acids (propionate, acetate), and essential amino acids. Its immune-modulating effects are linked both to its metabolites and cell-surface proteins that mediate host interaction. Preclinical studies support its use for protection against colitis, chemotherapeutic mucositis, and gut inflammatory disorders, with commercial products positioned for gastrointestinal and immune health applications[1][2].
