Propionic acid is a short-chain fatty acid (SCFA) naturally produced in the colon and distal small intestine by anaerobic bacteria through the fermentation of complex carbohydrates. It is also used as a food preservative. Propionic acid and its salts, such as sodium propionate and calcium propionate, have been shown to exert anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer, antibacterial, and antidiabetic effects. It positively influences auto-immune reactions, controls body weight and insulin sensitivity, affects cholesterol synthesis, and may retard progressive chronic kidney disease. Its mechanisms of action involve G-protein-coupled receptors (GPR 41, GPR 43, GPR 109a, Olfr78) and the modulation of histone deacetylase (HDAC) and histone acetyltransferase (HAT) activity.
