Propionyl-L-carnitine (PLC) is a propionyl ester of L-carnitine that serves as a critical cofactor in mitochondrial fatty acid metabolism and energy production. By facilitating the transport of long-chain fatty acids into the mitochondria for beta-oxidation, PLC helps restore cellular energy levels in tissues with impaired metabolic function. Additionally, PLC exhibits significant antioxidant properties, acting as a superoxide scavenger and reducing the expression of pro-inflammatory markers such as ICAM-1 and iNOS. In clinical development, PLC is primarily investigated as a colon-release oral formulation for the treatment of mild-to-moderate ulcerative colitis, where it aims to counteract mucosal inflammation and endothelial dysfunction.
