Overview

Propiopromazine is a phenothiazine derivative classified as a neuroleptic and tranquilizer primarily used in veterinary medicine. It acts mainly as an antagonist at dopamine D2 receptor and is considered a phenothiazine antipsychotic. Its primary use is to manage stress in pets and farm animals—especially for calming pigs during transport—and to aid in handling difficult or excited dogs by providing sedation and chemical restraint. Propiopromazine may also be used prior to minor surgery or diagnostic procedures in animals. The drug exerts its effects through central nervous system depression by blocking dopaminergic transmission[1][3][5][6].
