Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Propofol + lidocaine is a combination of two pharmaceutical agents commonly used in anesthesia practice. Propofol is an intravenous anesthetic agent that acts primarily as a positive allosteric modulator of the gamma-aminobutyric acid type A (GABA-A) receptor, enhancing inhibitory neurotransmission and inducing sedation and hypnosis[8]. Lidocaine is an amide-type local anesthetic that stabilizes neuronal membranes by inhibiting sodium ion channels, thereby blocking nerve impulse conduction and providing local anesthesia[6]. The combination is primarily used to reduce the pain associated with propofol injection during induction of anesthesia. Lidocaine can be administered either mixed with propofol or as a separate injection prior to propofol administration, significantly reducing the incidence and severity of injection pain through both local anesthetic effects at the vascular endothelium and central analgesic mechanisms[1][2][3][5]. This synergistic use does not alter the required dose for induction but may destabilize the emulsion if mixed directly[3][4].
