Overview

OBA (Opioid-Based Anesthesia) refers to a specific anesthetic protocol used as the control arm in a clinical trial conducted by Attikon Hospital to evaluate postoperative pain management. This regimen consists of a combination of the intravenous sedative-hypnotic propofol and the synthetic opioids fentanyl and remifentanil. In this protocol, propofol is used for both induction and maintenance of anesthesia, while fentanyl is administered at induction and remifentanil is infused for maintenance. The protocol is designed to provide stable intraoperative anesthesia and analgesia through the activation of GABA-A receptors and mu-opioid receptors, respectively. It serves as the standard-of-care comparator against Opioid-Free Anesthesia (OFA) in patients undergoing transurethral urological surgery.
