Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Propofol Lipuro 1% is a short-acting intravenous general anesthetic and sedative formulated as a 1% (10 mg/mL) lipid emulsion. Developed and manufactured by B. Braun, this specific formulation uses a mixture of medium-chain and long-chain triglycerides (MCT/LCT) to improve the tolerability of the injection, specifically aiming to reduce the pain on injection commonly associated with standard propofol emulsions. The active ingredient, propofol, is a small molecule that functions as a positive allosteric modulator of GABA-A receptors in the central nervous system, thereby enhancing inhibitory neurotransmission to induce and maintain anesthesia or sedation. It is widely approved in Europe and other international markets for use in adults and children as young as one month for general anesthesia and for sedation in patients over 16 years old in the intensive care unit.
