Drug intelligence / Profile preview
The propolis-based nanovesicular oromucoadhesive film is an investigational drug delivery platform developed by researchers at The British University in Egypt (BUE) for the treatment of recurrent aphthous ulcers (RAU). The formulation utilizes a propolis extract (PPE) rich in antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory flavonoids, including pinocembrin, pinobanksin, chrysin, and galangin. These active ingredients are encapsulated within niosomes—non-ionic surfactant vesicles composed of Span 60 and cholesterol—which are then incorporated into a mucoadhesive buccal film. This system is designed to provide controlled and prolonged release of the propolis flavonoids directly to the oral mucosa, leveraging their natural therapeutic properties to reduce pain, decrease ulcer size, and accelerate healing in patients with oral ulcerations.
