Propolis ethanolic extract is a preparation derived from raw propolis—a resinous substance collected by honeybees from plant sources—using ethanol as the extraction solvent. This process removes waxes and concentrates bioactive compounds such as flavonoids (notably phloridzin), phenolic acids (including p-coumaric acid and Artepillin C), and other polyphenols[5][6]. The resulting extract exhibits antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial (especially against gram-positive bacteria and yeasts), antiviral, hepatoprotective, and wound-healing properties[1][3][4]. Its mechanism of action is attributed to free-radical scavenging activity, inhibition of microbial growth, modulation of inflammatory pathways (e.g., cyclooxygenase inhibition), and possible effects on liver protection. Propolis ethanolic extracts are used in dietary supplements for general health support; they have also been studied for oral health applications (mouth rinses) and topical use in wound healing. However, clinical evidence supporting specific therapeutic uses remains limited.
