Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Propolis lozenges (Al-Mustansiriyah University) are a natural product-based therapeutic intervention being evaluated for the treatment of biofilm-induced gingivitis. Propolis is a resinous substance collected by honey bees that contains a variety of bioactive compounds, including flavonoids and phenolic acids, which possess antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties. The lozenges are designed to be used twice daily to control plaque accumulation and reduce gingival inflammation. The mechanism of action involves the modulation of salivary biomarkers, specifically the reduction of pro-inflammatory cytokines like Interleukin-1 beta and the potential elevation of anti-inflammatory cytokines like Interleukin-10, thereby improving clinical periodontal parameters such as the Gingival Index and Plaque Index.
