Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Propolis mouthwash is an investigational natural product-based oral rinse developed by Ziauddin University for the treatment of chronic periodontitis. The formulation consists of a 20% concentration of propolis, a resinous substance collected by honeybees that contains a complex mixture of polyphenols, flavonoids, and phenolic acids. These components provide the mouthwash with significant antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties. In clinical studies, it is utilized as an adjunct to mechanical scaling and root planing (SRP) to reduce gingival inflammation, decrease pocket depth, and inhibit the growth of periodontal pathogens. The product was specifically evaluated in perimenopausal women to determine its efficacy relative to standard 0.2% chlorhexidine mouthwash.
