Propolis toothpaste is a natural-product-based oral hygiene formulation being investigated by Cairo University for the prevention and management of dental caries, particularly in high-risk populations. Propolis, a resinous substance produced by honeybees, contains a complex mixture of bioactive compounds including flavonoids (such as pinocembrin and galangin) and phenolic acids (such as caffeic acid phenethyl ester). These constituents provide potent antimicrobial activity against cariogenic pathogens like *Streptococcus mutans* and inhibit the activity of glucosyltransferases, enzymes essential for the synthesis of extracellular polysaccharides that facilitate bacterial adhesion. By interfering with these processes, propolis toothpaste reduces the formation of dental biofilms (plaque) and limits acid production on tooth surfaces. Clinical research at Cairo University has focused on comparing the efficacy of propolis-based formulations against standard fluoride toothpastes for caries risk reduction.
