Overview

Propolis-University of Guadalajara refers to a specific natural resinous substance produced by honeybees that was investigated by researchers at the University of Guadalajara for the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus. Composed of a complex mixture of bioactive compounds, including flavonoids and polyphenols, this botanical supplement was evaluated in a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial. Administered orally at a dose of 300 mg twice daily for 12 weeks, it demonstrated significant efficacy in reducing fasting plasma glucose and glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) levels in treatment-naïve patients. Additionally, the treatment was associated with improved insulin sensitivity as measured by the Matsuda index and a reduction in the first phase of insulin secretion. While its precise molecular targets are not fully elucidated, its therapeutic effects are attributed to its impact on glucose metabolism and insulin signaling pathways.
