Overview

Propranolol + oxytocin is a combination therapy used in obstetrics to augment labor, particularly in cases of dysfunctional or prolonged labor. Propranolol is a beta-adrenergic receptor blocker that increases uterine activity by reversing the suppressive effect of beta-agonists on uterine motility. Oxytocin is a hormone that directly stimulates uterine contractions. When used together, this combination has been shown to shorten the duration of labor (especially the latent phase), reduce the need for cesarean section, and improve outcomes in women with inadequate uterine contractility without significant adverse effects on maternal or neonatal health[1][2][9].
