Overview

Propyl propane thiosulfonate (PTSO) is a naturally occurring organosulfur compound derived from *Allium* species, such as onions (*Allium cepa*) and garlic (*Allium sativum*). It is primarily utilized as a functional feed additive in veterinary medicine and aquaculture due to its broad-spectrum antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and immunomodulatory properties. PTSO has demonstrated significant efficacy in reducing pathogenic bacterial populations, including *Salmonella*, *Escherichia coli*, and *Vibrio*, while promoting the growth of beneficial gut bacteria such as *Lactobacillus* and *Bifidobacterium*. Beyond its antimicrobial role, PTSO exhibits antioxidant activity through the activation of the Nrf2 pathway and reduces the expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines like IL-6 and IL-8. Research is also investigating its potential application in human health for the management of metabolic syndrome, obesity, and the prevention of colorectal cancer.
