Overview

Propylene glycol is a synthetic organic compound with the chemical formula C3H8O2. It is a viscous, colorless, and nearly odorless liquid that is widely used as a solvent, humectant, and vehicle in the pharmaceutical, cosmetic, and food industries. In the field of endodontics, specifically within the Lesion Sterilization and Tissue Repair (LSTR) technique, propylene glycol is utilized as a viscous vehicle for delivering antimicrobial agents, such as Double Antibiotic Paste (DAP), into the root canal system of non-vital primary teeth. Its high viscosity and hygroscopic properties facilitate the penetration of medicaments into the dentinal tubules and periapical tissues, aiding in the sterilization of infected lesions and promoting tissue repair. While primarily serving as a carrier, it also exhibits mild inherent antibacterial activity due to its osmotic effects.
