Propylene glycol + hydroxypropyl-guar is a combination used primarily as an ocular lubricant in artificial tear formulations for the management of dry eye disease. Propylene glycol acts as a demulcent and lubricant, providing moisture and protection to the ocular surface, while hydroxypropyl-guar (HP-guar), a derivative of guar gum, functions as a gelling agent that forms a protective matrix on the corneal surface. This matrix enhances retention time and stabilizes the tear film by conforming to irregularities on the ocular surface. The combination improves hydration, reduces friction, and protects against desiccation-induced damage. It is commonly found in preservative-free artificial tears for moderate-to-severe dry eye symptoms[4][6][8].
