Overview

Propylene glycol + polyethylene glycol is a combination topical lubricant (artificial tear) formulation used for the treatment of dry eye disease. It acts as a demulcent by increasing the volume of the tear film and forming a protective gel matrix on the ocular surface. This matrix helps reduce tear evaporation and drainage, maintaining moisture and protecting the corneal epithelium. A specific preservative-free formulation, Glicolub Ultra (0.3% propylene glycol and 0.4% polyethylene glycol 400), developed by Tecnoquimicas, is used to manage mild to moderate dry eye symptoms. The combination is also widely known under the brand name Systane, developed by Alcon.
