Overview

Propylene glycol-hydroxypropyl guar nanoemulsion is a lubricant eye drop formulation indicated for the temporary relief of burning and irritation due to dryness of the eye, commonly used in the management of dry eye disease (DED). The active ingredient, propylene glycol (0.6%), acts as a demulcent providing lubrication, while hydroxypropyl guar serves as a pH-sensitive gelling agent that cross-links with borate ions in the tear film to form a soft gel matrix. This mechanism prolongs retention time on the ocular surface and enhances lubrication. The formulation also contains dimyristoyl phosphatidyl glycerol to replenish the lipid layer of tears, further supporting ocular surface protection. Clinical studies have demonstrated significant improvement in multiple symptoms associated with dry eye disease over 28 days without new safety concerns[1][2][6].
