propylhexedrine

Propylhexedrine is a small molecule sympathomimetic amine used primarily as an over-the-counter nasal decongestant. It acts as an alpha-adrenergic agonist, causing vasoconstriction in the nasal mucosa to relieve congestion associated with colds, allergies, and allergic rhinitis[1][2][3][4][5]. At therapeutic doses via inhalation, its main effect is local vasoconstriction; at higher or abused doses, it acts centrally as a norepinephrine–dopamine releasing agent (NDRA), increasing synaptic concentrations of norepinephrine and dopamine by reversing their transporters and antagonizing VMAT2[1][3][6]. Propylhexedrine was first introduced for medical use in 1949[3] and is marketed under the brand name Benzedrex. It has a low potential for abuse compared to other stimulants but can cause serious cardiovascular and psychiatric effects if misused[5][8].
