Overview

Propyliodone is a synthetic, iodinated small molecule used as a radiopaque contrast medium, primarily for bronchography to visualize the bronchial tree. It was developed by Imperial Chemical Industries in the late 1930s and marketed under brand names such as Dionosil. When instilled directly into the bronchi, it produces well-defined bronchograms for at least 30 minutes. Its mechanism of action is based on its ability to absorb X-rays due to its iodine content, thereby enhancing radiographic imaging of body structures like airways. Due to significant risks including anaphylaxis, respiratory obstruction, and cerebral embolization, use has been largely discontinued except in essential cases[1][3][5]. The drug belongs to the class of iodinated radio-opacifying agents (radiocontrast media) and is classified pharmacologically as a diagnostic aid[1][2][8].
