Overview

Prosopis cineraria is a perennial tree native to arid regions of South Asia and the Middle East, widely used in traditional medicine. All parts of the plant—including leaves, bark, pods (sangria), flowers, and gum—are utilized for their medicinal properties. Traditionally administered orally or topically, Prosopis cineraria has been used to treat a broad spectrum of conditions such as diabetes, liver infections, diarrhea, kidney and bladder stones, fever, flu symptoms, rheumatism/arthritis pain and inflammation (including rheumatoid arthritis), leucorrhea (vaginal discharge), boils/blisters/skin rashes/wounds/burns/cataracts/conjunctivitis/ringworm/other skin diseases; respiratory disorders like asthma; spasms; dyspepsia; high cholesterol/hyperlipidemia; anemia; malaria; sexually transmitted infections and gynecological complaints[1][2][4]. Phytochemical studies have identified compounds such as acta-cosanol, hentriacontane, cholesterol derivatives (sterols including stigmasterol), alkaloids (with analgesic effects), flavonoids like vitexin with anti-proliferative activity against leukemia cells[2]. Preclinical research demonstrates anti-inflammatory activity via wound healing acceleration and reduction in inflammatory markers[2], hypolipidemic effects by normalizing lipid profiles in animal models[2], antidiabetic action through blood glucose regulation[1][4], bronchodilatory effect via calcium channel blockade leading to smooth muscle relaxation[4], antimicrobial/antibacterial actions against various pathogens[4], antioxidant properties by increasing enzymatic/non-enzymatic antioxidants in tissues[4], analgesic effects on pain models in animals[2] as well as antitumor potential. The plant is also valued for its nutritional content—pods are consumed as food—and its ecological role in arid agriculture.
