Prosopis juliflora pollen allergen extract is derived from the pollen of the mesquite tree and is a significant cause of respiratory allergies, including allergic rhinitis and asthma, particularly in arid and semi-arid regions. The extract contains a complex mixture of allergenic proteins with molecular weights ranging from 10 to 99 kDa. [2] It is used for the diagnosis of mesquite pollen allergies through skin prick tests and specific IgE blood tests. [1, 3] Research has identified specific allergenic components, such as Pro j 1, an Ole e 1-like protein, and a 66-kDa protein, which are relevant for understanding cross-reactivity with other plant pollens (like Acacia) and foods (like lima bean). [12] Modified versions of the extract, known as allergoids, have been studied for use in allergen-specific immunotherapy (desensitization). [9]
