Overview

Prospan is a herbal medicinal product whose active ingredient is a standardized dry extract of ivy leaf (Hedera helix), commonly referred to as EA 575. It is primarily used as an expectorant and spasmolytic agent for the relief of coughs associated with acute catarrh (inflammation) of the respiratory tract and for symptomatic treatment of chronic inflammatory bronchial diseases. The mechanism of action involves relaxing bronchial smooth muscle (spasmolytic effect), liquefying viscous mucus in the airways (mucolytic effect), and facilitating its removal by coughing, thereby improving breathing. Prospan does not suppress the cough reflex but helps clear mucus from the airways[2][9]. It has been clinically shown to relieve both dry and productive coughs without causing drowsiness[4][7]. The product is alcohol-free, sugar-free, and suitable for adults and children.
