Prostaglandin B2 (PGB2) is a naturally occurring prostanoid, part of the broader eicosanoid family derived from C-20 polyunsaturated fatty acids such as arachidonic acid. It is classified as a small molecule and is considered an experimental compound rather than an approved pharmaceutical drug[1][4]. PGB2 is formed non-enzymatically as a dehydration product of PGE2 or PGA2 under strong basic conditions[9]. It has weak agonist activity at thromboxane-prostanoid (TP) receptors and can increase pulmonary blood pressure in animal models at high doses[9]. Prostaglandins, including PGB2, act locally via G protein-coupled receptors to mediate diverse physiological processes such as inflammation, vascular tone regulation, immune cell modulation, and smooth muscle contraction[4][5][6]. However, unlike other clinically used prostaglandins (e.g., PGE1 analogues), there are no approved therapeutic indications for Prostaglandin B2.
