Overview

Prostasan is a standardized herbal extract derived from the berries of the saw palmetto plant (*Serenoa repens*), developed by A. Vogel. It is primarily indicated for the relief of lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) associated with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). The extract's mechanism of action is multi-factorial, involving the inhibition of 5-alpha-reductase (which reduces the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone), competitive antagonism of androgen receptors, and anti-inflammatory activity via the inhibition of cyclooxygenase (COX) and 5-lipoxygenase (5-LOX) pathways. Clinical research, including open-label pilot trials, has also explored its efficacy in improving sexual dysfunction, such as erectile function and libido, in men suffering from BPH symptoms.
