ProstaSeed

ProstaSeed is a permanent interstitial brachytherapy source consisting of Iodine-125 adsorbed onto a silver-coated organic filament, encapsulated within a laser-welded titanium capsule. Developed by North American Scientific, it is specifically designed for the treatment of localized prostate cancer through the permanent implantation of multiple seeds into the prostate gland. The device functions by emitting low-energy X-rays and gamma rays (primarily 27-35 keV) as the Iodine-125 isotope undergoes electron capture decay with a half-life of approximately 59.4 days. This localized radiation induces double-strand breaks in the DNA of malignant cells, leading to cell death while sparing distant healthy tissues due to the rapid attenuation of low-energy photons in tissue.
