Prostaserene

Prostaserene is a botanical extract medication developed and marketed by Therabel Group for the symptomatic treatment of urinary disorders associated with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). The active ingredient is a lipophilic extract of *Serenoa repens* (saw palmetto) fruit, typically standardized to 320 mg per soft capsule and obtained through supercritical carbon dioxide extraction. Its mechanism of action is multi-targeted, exhibiting anti-inflammatory, anti-edematous, and anti-androgenic properties. Specifically, it inhibits cyclooxygenase (COX) and lipoxygenase (LOX) enzymes, reduces the activity of 5-alpha reductase, and modulates androgen and estrogen receptor activity within the prostate. Unlike synthetic BPH treatments such as 5-alpha reductase inhibitors or alpha-blockers, Prostaserene does not significantly alter prostate-specific antigen (PSA) levels, allowing for continued prostate cancer screening. It is administered orally as a once-daily dose for adult males.
